Light and Shadow, Leitrim Evening
From the bog in the townland of Balloor in north Leitrim a shaft of light strikes the dramatic face of Benwiskin Mountain in the Dartry range. The stunning profile of Benwiskin is often likened to a breaking wave. A long shadow is cast up into Gleniff Valley and the famous Gleniff Horseshoe, so called because of the valley’s shape. High up in the cliffs of Annacoona in the Gleniff Horseshoe lies the legendary cave of Diarmuid and Grainne, famous in Irish myth. It is the highest cave in Ireland and is a place steeped in folklore and romance. The story is that the eloping couple, who were on the run from the jealous warrior chief Fionn Mac Cumhaill, who had planned to take Grainne for his wife, hid in the cave to avoid being captured.
