May Evening Memory Harbour

May Evening, Memory Harbour

When taking photographs in Sligo, you are always aware of literary and artistic references. The beautifully proportioned lighthouse on Oyster Island, which sits opposite Rosses Point in Co Sligo, features prominently in a painting by the artist Jack Yeats called ‘Memory Harbour’. As the name suggests, it recalls the summers he spent In Sligo and particularly in Rosses Point as a boy.

The lines from the poem ‘Raglan Road’, by the poet Patrick Kavanagh, ‘With her own dark hair and her own name there, like the clouds over fields of May’, captures in a few words the essence of the light of a May evening and, of course, the beautiful hair of the young woman.
